The Big Bad Parvo Attack on Our New Labrador Pup

(This particular event happened 5 months ago.)

She sports a caramel colored skin, anxious eyes but in ready to defend state, eats like a king, barks when being photographed, but just like any other dog, she loves to be pet.  These I've come to know of during the first 2 days Silva was at home, her new home.

My brother have always wanted a guard dog that's why he really saved to buy a labrador pup. Jewel seems to be the always sweet princess-y kind and my brother yearns to own a real watch dog, the brave and sporty kind so he decided to purchase a labrador pup from a friend's friend who breeds and sells dogs. For the price of Php3500, he finally got one at 2 months old and named her Silva, inspired from the famous Mixed Martial Arts sport fighter of which he is a big fan of. As Jewel seems to be more of a house pet, a partner guard dog is a good option for our family's security. And so one good weekday morning...

Jewel Finally Meets Silva

when 2 year old spitz meets 2 month old lab

Silva was brought to the garden from inside a dog cage. We were all excited as to how our spitz would react  and welcome our new pup. Jewel sniffed around her as it's the very first time she saw another dog inside the lot. Both didn't bark at one another, just curious.

Built for sport, the Lab is muscular and athletic. He has a short, easy-care coat, friendly demeanor  keen intelligence, and plenty of energy. Devotion to this breed runs deep; Labs are loving, people-oriented dogs who live to serve their families, and owners and fans sometimes liken their Labs to angels. - dogtime.com

Hours later, we noticed that Jewel was being snobbish, acting as if she didn't care if there's a new dog around and that we're all taking care of Silva, giving her a mouthful of dog food and water (she eats aplenty!). Jewel simply walked pass her but we all felt she was jealous or feeling betrayed probably. When we tried to get near her to pet her too, she would walk away as if giving us the cold shoulder. Could the dog really felt so jealous?

The Big Bad News

Just one day after Silva arrived, mom called on the phone telling me that the new dog was brought to the vet clinic because she apparently lost her appetite, a far cry from how aplenty she eats when she arrived. The vet doctor, after a series of test diagnosed Silva to have been strucked by Parvovirus. I was horrified because I knew it's one of those dreaded fatal diseases. My initial reaction was to instruct mom to get Jewel away from Silva because I know that Parvo is extremely  infectious.

Check out this video created by a vet doctor discussing dog parvovirus:

Must know facts about Parvo:

1. Symptoms - high fever, lethargy, depression, loss of appetite, severe gastrointestinal distress, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, dehydration, shock and death
2. Transmitted through infected feces, vomit, urine, nose to nose contact

Some breeds like labrador retrievers, rottweilers, doberman pinschers, pitbulls and german shepherds are reported to be more at risk than others.

The Parvo Attack Caught on Video

Silva being given a fluid using syringe (without needle) bought from the vet, supposedly to help fight dehydration. We also mixed the fluid with ganoderma

Dog owners who once dealt with their dogs having a parvo would surely understand how heartbreaking it is to see your dog's health fade away so rapidly. More heart wrenching when you've took care of the dog for years. We had Silva for just 2 days and here we see her battle for her life. Mom, my brother and I would go to her every minute or so to giver the much needed fluid and care that she needs. But she would try to get away from us, as if not wanting to be seen struggling like that. I would catch myself teary eyed whenever I see her make that slow deep breath.

The vet doctor told mom that the lab only has 3 days at most to live as parvo would usually kill a young puppy in just 2-3 days. But Silva was a fighter, she battled for more than a week until her young body finally succumbed to the dreadful disease.

Farewell Silva

our very sick lab wanting to get away of our sight and curdle in the farther side of the garden

Her first day with us was a good one. She was full of vibe, as expected from a young labrador pup. Unfortunately transformed to the exact opposite on the second day. She couldn't walk straight. Her eyes spell loneliness and pain. We, too, were in pain. We finally agreed to give her back to the previous owner who we assumed knows more of parvo so the right treatment could be given. But like I said, the young lab gave in eventually.

The Heart-pounding Test Result For Jewel

While waiting inside the vet clinic, Jewel seems to be okay.

We went to the vet clinic the following day to have Jewel checked by the doctor. Both dogs were separated as soon as we found out about the parvo, but we had to be sure as they already had their initial contact. Our spitz had already been injected with anti-parvo shot but it has been more than a year since the last shot.

The waiting game...

While waiting for the result, Jewel seems to be in a relaxed state while mom and I had to endure the longest 8 minutes of our lives hoping for a NEGATIVE result.

and the result?
Our spitz is Negative for Parvo!!! Woot! So happy!!!!

Mom and I was just in full joy to see the result (just like in pregnancy test, one line means negative, 2 lines mean positive). We couldn't see ourselves go through that painful dilemma and see our precious dog struggle. This dog is our baby, a joy in our family. Aside from giving her another parvo vaccine, the vet doctor encouraged that we test Jewel for heartworm and was negative too. We also took home a chewable Heartgard Plus for heartworm prevention.

Heartgard Plus

Parvo can be such a pain so it really pays to have our dogs be vaccinated.
